About the event

With a focus on empowerment and education, this seminar series aims to shed light on the often overlooked chapters of Black history. It seeks to inspire participants to not only gain a deeper understanding of the past but also to actively engage in conversations that promote inclusivity, justice, and change. "Exploring Radical Black History" is an opportunity to celebrate resilience, activism, and the enduring contributions of Black individuals and communities to our shared history. Join us on this enlightening journey of discovery and reflection.

Each week, attendees will explore a different facet of Radical Black History through curated cultural texts such as films, documentaries, and music playlists. These texts serve as a springboard for dynamic discussions, offering insights into the historical realities and their contemporary relevance. Led by knowledgeable facilitators, the seminar series encourages open dialogue, critical thinking, and the exchange of diverse perspectives.

Week 1: "Stamped: A Survey of Our Story"

  • Date: [February 4]
  • Description: The first week will be led by Dr. Gigi, who will provide an overview and a survey of Black history based on the book "Stamped from the Beginning." This will set the tone for the cultural texts we will explore in-depth throughout the course.

Week 2: "Birth of a Nation"

  • Date: [February 11]
  • Description: In our second week, we will kick off the seminar series with a screening of the powerful film "The Birth of a Nation" (2016), directed by Nate Parker. This contemporary film provides a reimagining of the Nat Turner slave rebellion and serves as a starting point to discuss the historical realities of slavery, resistance, and the fight for freedom. We will explore how the film portrays the complex and often brutal history of Black enslavement in America and its impact on the present day. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on this modern portrayal of a pivotal moment in Black history.

Week 3: "Vanguards of the Revolution"

  • Date: [February 18]
  • Description: In week three, we will explore the documentary "Vanguards of the Revolution," which takes us through the Black Panther Party's journey and its role in the civil rights movement. We will discuss the importance of activism, resistance, and the fight for justice, drawing connections to the present-day struggle for racial equality. This week's session promises to be an enlightening exploration of Black activism and its enduring impact.

Week 4: "Selected Songs from a Curated Playlist"

  • Date: [February 25]
  • Description: Week four offers a unique experience as we delve into selected songs from a curated playlist. Music has always been a powerful medium for expressing the Black experience and addressing social issues. Join us as we analyze the lyrics, melodies, and messages behind these songs, exploring how music has shaped Black history and culture. Prepare to be inspired and moved by the melodies of the past and their relevance today.

Week 5: "The Form and Function of Black Religion in America"

  • Date: [March 2]
  • Description: In our final week, we will explore the documentary "In Our Mother's  Gardens," which is available on Netflix. This documentary beautifully explores the wisdom, traditions, and resilience of Black women in America. Through personal stories, interviews, and reflections, it delves into the cultural heritage passed down through generations. We will discuss the importance of preserving and celebrating this heritage, connecting it to the ongoing struggle for racial equality and the empowerment of the Black community.
